The Chilcotin
The Chilcotin is one of my favourite areas to visit. The drive from Williams Lake to the Sheep Creek Bridge is a scenic but mountainous drive. Once there stop before the bridge and take a look at the breath taking views. Watch the large logging trucks negotiate the steep downhill road.
Once you cross the bridge you start the climb up the Sheep Creek Hill. It winds its way up the mountain side and if you get behind a large truck you are in for a slow climb up to the Chilcotin Plateau. Half way up or so there is a look out that you can view the spectacular valley below.
Once on top of the Chilcotin Plateau, you come to the grasslands known as Bechers Prairie. It is made up of a number of different grass types and is a valuable natural resource and environment.
We actually went looking for the cabin of Eric Collier. He was a trapper back in the thirties that took his family back into Meldrum Creek and earned his living off the land. He came to understand the importance of the beaver and other natural inhabitants of the area and was responsible of re-introducing the beaver back into the area of Meldrum Creek. Unfortunatly, we were not able to find the cabin but did find some spectacular country off in the back roads of the Chilcotin.
These photos are the result of our little adventure!
*Eric Collier was a trapper, writer and enviromentalist. I recommend his book "Three Against the Wilderness." A story of a man that takes his family into the wildnerness and lives off the land. This book sits in my library and one of my favourite reads!
